A winter break job search plan for new grads (Dec 1 to Jan 9)

Why a winter plan works

Employers kept hiring through December 2025: about 3.9 million hires before seasonal adjustment, according to preliminary BLS JOLTS data. College recruiting also continues into the new year. In NACE's Job Outlook 2026 Spring Update, employers reported that 37% of full-time college recruiting now happens in the spring.

A plan with a start and end date keeps the search moving through the holidays, when schedules fall apart.

Dec 1 to 10: targets and résumé

• Pick two or three job titles that use your degree and list ten employers that hire for them.
• Rewrite your résumé in a one-column, ATS-safe format with your strongest evidence in the top third.
• Write three STAR stories (situation, task, action, result) from classes, jobs, clubs, or internships.
• Send one carefully tailored application a day so the first ones are your best.

Dec 11 to 20: application sprints

• Run three 25-minute sprints a day: find a role, tailor the top of the résumé, send, and log it with a follow-up date.
• Aim for 25 or more logged applications by Dec 20.
• Follow up on every application older than seven days with a two-sentence note.

Dec 21 to Jan 3: the holiday block

• Drop to one or two applications a day and protect the holidays themselves.
• Ask two relatives or family friends for one introduction each to someone who hires entry-level people.
• Run one mock interview with a parent or friend using your STAR stories.
• On Jan 2 or 3, read your numbers: applications, replies, and interviews. Low replies means change targeting or the résumé. Replies with no interviews means fix the first screen.

Jan 4 to 9: restart

• Go back to three sprints a day as offices reopen.
• Follow up on every December application that went quiet.
• Add three alternate job titles if your reply rate stayed near zero.
• Pick the one change you will carry into the rest of January.
