What to say when relatives ask about your job search over the holidays

Write your one-line status before you leave

The formula is target role, place, and next step. "I'm going after junior analyst roles in Dallas and I have a second-round interview on the 9th." "I'm applying for research assistant jobs at hospitals and I'm rewriting my résumé this week."

A specific sentence ends the topic faster than a vague one. "Still looking" invites five follow-up questions. A named role and a date invites a nod.

Answers for the questions you will hear

• "So, any luck?" Say: "I've sent about thirty applications this month and have one interview next week. I'll know more in December."
• "Have you tried applying at [big company]?" Say: "That one is on my list. I'm applying to smaller firms too."
• "You should go into [field]." Say: "I'll look at it. Right now I'm focused on [your target role] because it uses my degree."
• "Do you know anyone at [company]? My friend's son works there." Say: "I'd love an introduction. Could you send me his name?" This one is useful. Follow up the next day.
• "When are you moving out?" Say: "Once I have an offer. My parents and I set a check-in plan for the search."
• "Kids these days don't want to work." Say: "The market is slower for new grads this year. I'm working the plan." Then change the subject.

Turn one relative into a lead

Holiday gatherings put you in a room with people who have jobs in dozens of industries. Pick two relatives whose work sounds close to your target and ask one specific question: "Who hires entry-level people where you work, and would they take a 15-minute call?"

Write the names down the same night and send a short thank-you message within 48 hours. Log each lead in your tracker with a follow-up date.

Know the numbers so the answer stays honest

A status line is easy when you track three numbers each week: applications sent, replies, and interviews. If the reply rate is near zero after twenty or more tailored applications, change targeting or the résumé before sending more.
